    Claude vs. ChatGPTfor Nonprofits

What each costs a verified nonprofit, how the discounts work, and what happens to your data.

    The Short Answer

For a small nonprofit team, the price is now essentially the same. Anthropic and OpenAI both offer verified nonprofits workplace seats for about $8 per user per month, with a two-seat minimum. Neither discount applies to individual accounts, so the cheapest legitimate route for most organizations is a small team workspace, not personal subscriptions.

    Business (Standard Seats)

    ChatGPT

    $8

per user / month billed annually ($10 monthly) · 2-seat minimum

The real differences are in fit: which tool your staff write and think with best, which connects to the systems you already use, and how your organization governs sensitive information.

Nonprofit price $8 per user / month $8 per user / month billed annually, or $10 billed monthly
Seat minimum 2 seats (teams under 150) 2 seats

Prices are in US dollars, exclude tax, and were checked against each company's own pages in October 2026. Vendors change terms often; confirm before you budget.

Example: a five-person team on annual billing pays roughly $480 a year on either platform. Many older guides still quote ChatGPT's nonprofit rate as $20 a seat; OpenAI's help center now lists $8.

    How to Apply

    1. Claude: verify your status through Anthropic's partner Goodstack. Team plans are approved in minutes; Enterprise pricing goes through Anthropic's sales team.
    2. ChatGPT: submit OpenAI's nonprofit form with the email you'll use for ChatGPT Business. Once approved, the discount applies to Standard seats at checkout (or is prorated on an existing workspace).
    3. Have your registration documents ready. Eligibility rules exclude some organization types; for example, Anthropic's program does not cover higher-education institutions or political campaigns.

    Privacy and Donor Data

Both companies state that data in their business plans (Claude Team and Enterprise, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise) is not used to train their models by default. That is a meaningful reason to use an organizational workspace instead of free or personal accounts, where settings and defaults differ.

A workspace setting is not a data policy. Before staff paste anything sensitive, decide:

    • What never goes into any AI tool (for example, case notes, health information, or survivor and client identities).
    • Whether donor records may be summarized, and by whom.
    • Who administers the workspace, and how accounts are removed when people leave.
    • How AI-assisted work is reviewed by a person before it reaches donors, funders, or the public.

If you handle regulated health data, neither nonprofit discount includes a business associate agreement by default; talk to the vendor first. Our own commitments are published on the AI Compact page.
