    When leaders ask, “Is my nonprofit ready for AI?” they often imagine that “ready” means having the technical infrastructure, data pipelines, or staff capacity. But those are only parts of the picture.

    In Part 1, I argued that AI is a mirror—reflecting the inequities we've already built. Now we need to ask: How do we prepare ourselves to look into that mirror honestly?

    True readiness is an ethical capacity—the ability to spot harm before it happens, to respond when things go off track, and to center equity not as an afterthought but as a design principle.

    Rethinking Readiness

    Many nonprofits are already experimenting with AI. But few are structured to govern it well. In practice, readiness often fails for three reasons:

    1. Too fast, too shallow. Tools are adopted before foundational questions are asked.

    2. Governance gaps. No one monitors for bias or unintended consequences.

    3. Value drift. Over time, AI outputs begin to reflect the tool’s priorities rather than your mission.

    If readiness is only about tools, it’s a trap. It leads to adoption without accountability.

    As the Stanford Social Innovation Review puts it, nonprofits and funders must build shared infrastructure—norms, templates, and supports that make ethical AI possible even with limited resources.¹

    Partnerships that treat nonprofits as co-designers, not passive users, are the real accelerators of readiness.²

    Four Domains of Readiness

    These steps don’t require new departments. They require new habits.

    Governance Without Overhead

    Large corporations use Algorithm Review Boards (ARBs) to oversee AI decisions, but most nonprofits can’t. The goal isn’t to copy that model—it’s to borrow its spirit.³

    You don’t need an Algorithm Review Board—you need accountability.

    Start simple:

    • Before adopting a tool, ask a short set of questions: Could this harm someone? Who monitors errors?

    • Create a mini-review team, even if it’s just two colleagues or a community advisor.

    • After each experiment, debrief with stakeholders and capture lessons learned.

    Research shows that successful governance isn’t about bureaucracy—it’s about alignment and ownership.⁴

    Six Practical Moves

    1. Run a bias-risk preflight. Identify where bias could emerge.

    2. Log decisions. Track who approved each AI use and what data informed it.

    3. Use fairness tools. Free options like AI Fairness 360 or Aequitas can flag disparities.⁵

    4. Pilot in safe spaces. Test AI internally before using it with clients or communities.

    5. Join peer networks. Learn in public; others will share what works.

    6. Publish your guardrails. Develop your own version of Common Ground’s AI Compact and make your commitments visible.

    The Moral Backbone of Readiness

    Funders and tech partners often push for speed. But in a values-driven sector, the more urgent task is building a moral backbone strong enough to resist shortcuts.

    AI isn’t just another technology—it’s an ethical test.

    AI isn’t just another technology—it’s an ethical test. It magnifies what already exists. If our systems are inclusive and transparent, AI can help scale that good. If not, it will scale inequity instead.

    When someone asks if your organization is “ready for AI,” consider this answer:

    “We’re building readiness that reflects who we are and whom we serve. We’ll make mistakes. We’ll listen. We’ll adapt.”

    That kind of readiness lasts.
